Clean Water Act discharge permits

Anyone who discharges to a river, lake or coastal water in the United States holds an NPDES permit: sewage treatment plants, factories, livestock operations, mines, municipal storm sewers and construction sites. These pages group the current register by state, by city, by the watershed the discharge reaches, and by the kind of operation permitted.

Every permit’s record, A to Z

Each current permit has a record page: the permittee and the facility, the receiving water, the permit’s status and dates, and its effluent limits and exceedances. By state, A to Z:

By what a permit limits

Every limit a discharge permit carries is written against a named pollutant or property -- temperature, lead, biochemical oxygen demand, pH. EPA calls that a parameter, and this register files a permit against every one of them.

By watershed

Every permit is placed on the national Watershed Boundary Dataset, so a discharge can be read at the scale it matters: the subbasin, the watershed inside it, or the subwatershed the outfall sits in.
